Assignment 1

The assignment requires students to work in groups of 4-5 to critically evaluate the application of passive sustainable design strategies in buildings. Each group must choose two case studies: one from a tropical climate region and one from another climatic region, such as arid, Mediterranean, temperate continental, or polar. The selected buildings should be 3-5 stories high. The task involves identifying and comparing the passive design strategies used in both case studies, focusing on site planning, daylighting, façade design, natural ventilation, and strategic landscaping. Additionally, students must analyze how these strategies impact the quality and spatial experience of the buildings.

To present our findings, each group is required to produce several deliverables: an A0 infographic poster in portrait orientation summarizing the passive design strategies and comparing the two case studies, an A4 landscape booklet of 25-30 pages that includes written text, diagrams, sketches, drawings, and images, and a pre-recorded presentation video lasting 10-15 minutes that represents the poster content.

Reflective Write-Up

The assignment focuses on the development of passive and active green building strategies in conjunction with your final architectural studio project. The goal is to enhance the efficiency of resource use—such as energy, water, and materials—while minimizing the building's impact on human health and the environment throughout its lifecycle. We are expected to analyze theories and principles of passive green building design strategies and integrate your understanding of these sustainable strategies into your architectural design.

Each student is required to visit a green building and prepare a reflective write-up that describes what they have learned from the visit and how they plan to apply these strategies in their final projects. This reflection should incorporate insights gained from Assignment 1, including passive green building strategies related to site planning, daylighting, façade design, natural ventilation, strategic landscaping, and renewable energies.

The submission for this assignment includes an A4 reflective write-up, which should be 3-5 pages long (excluding cover and references) with a minimum of 1000 words. The write-up should include point-form textual descriptions, images, infographics, sketches, or doodles to illustrate the strategies.

Assignment 2

For this assignment, students are required to prepare an A3 report that is a minimum of 15 pages in landscape orientation, excluding the cover, content pages, and appendix. The soft copy of the report should not exceed 50MB and must be uploaded via the provided Google Drive link. The report should include main text with a standard font size of 12, and the strategies should be illustrated through point-form textual descriptions, images, infographics, sketches, or doodles. Relevant drawings, such as plans, sections, elevations, and 3D views of the selected areas, along with data analysis, options, and samples, should also be included. References must be formatted according to APA guidelines.
