Theories of Asian Architecture

Project 1

This project requires students to select one traditional street from a given list and conduct a physical site visit. We need to identify contexts of the selected street and showcase 8 pages of sketches on the sketch book. Caption and annotations and coloring are required for each piece of sketch. Furthermore, write a summary that with 300 words on the last page.

Project 2

This project is based on the previously chosen site. We are in a group with seven members, and we have to identify the issues with the site, present potential solutions, and provide a case study. Our group has chosen Jalan Tun H.S. Lee in Kuala Lumpur to focus on architecture, business, and community. We did a time-based study on heritage buildings. Lastly, we have to present a poster that we put the findings on and make a video presentation.

Reflection

Throughout project 1, I have a better understanding for the relationship between architecture, social, cultural and intellectual context.

For project 2, this attempt has made the value of preserving a place's identity, which frequently erodes when cities experience growth and lose an essential part of their historical narrative, abundantly evident to me.  By examining the historical and present architecture, businesses, and community of Jalan Tun H.S.Lee, it also aids me in a better understanding of the authenticity of the location itself from the early 20th century to the present 2023. It also informs me of the need of maintaining and repairing the site for future generations. Thus, they may emulate the older generation and respect the historical sites that our ancestors left behind.
